The George Washington Bridge and Bus Terminal

Corner of 181st and Fort Washington GW Bridge Bus Terminal
181st Street is the main shopping street in this part of Manhattan. Here is the corner of 181st Street and Fort Washington Ave. In the foreground are the ornate buildings characteristic of the neighborhood; in the background on the left you can see the tops of the Bridge Apartments. After crossing 181st St, the GW Bridge Bus Terminal looms to the south. This building is -- I think -- one of the ugliest buildings in Upper Manhattan. Its brutalist modernism certainly sticks out like a sore thumb in the midst of the refined, classical apartment buildings surrounding it. Why was this architectural idiom ever employed at all?

GW Bridge GW Bridge traffic jam
The GW Bridge Bus Terminal straddles the Trans Manhattan Expressway, which is the 0.9 mile long section of I95 passing through Manhattan, and connects New York to New Jersey over the beautiful George Washington Bridge. The M4 bus passes over the TME on Fort Washington Avenue. As usual, traffic is backed up in both directions on the bridge.

J. H. Wright baseball field J. H. Wright playground
Between 176th and 173rd we pass by J. Hood Wright park. The city has recently invested in fixing up the park, and the results are very good. This is the baseball field. The playground at the park is very popular, and features a little replica of the GW Bridge for the children to climb on.

Across the street from Wright park is 171st St, which presents a typical streetscape in mid Washington Heights. Usenet denizen David Chesler grew up on 171st St, in this building.
