The first part of the ride took us through the dreaded South Bronx. Despite its nasty reputation, the South Bronx has bounced back in a big way. Although occasional streets looked pretty scrappy, most areas looked like they were thriving, albeit poor. The building on the left, despite looking a little forelorn, is occupied. Typical is the scene on the right -- little corner bodegas run by immigrants are everywhere. And check out the red brick buildings on the right! Their beauty is reminescent of the brick tenements in the East Village.

We took a turn down Charlotte Street -- one of the South Bronx's most famous streets. In the 1970s, Charlotte Street was a bombed-out moonscape of abandoned buildings and rubble patrolled by rats and criminals. Patrick Breslin recalled the time in this article . At the peak of the Bronx's problems in 1977, then-president Carter stood on Charlotte Street and promised to rebuild the Bronx. Carter's promise was fulfilled: the ranch-style building which we rode past were the first seeds of renewal which were planed in the Bronx more than 20 years ago.
After Charlotte Street, we passed through the business district on the right.
