The shopping district on 187th street is smaller than 181st St. Because of its size, and the fact that it is surrounded by a quiet residential neighborhood, the 187th street shopping district feels like a village center rather than a street in New York City.

Geomart is the local hardware store. It's a good place to buy an air conditioner on a hot day. On the right you can see the China Wok on the corner of 187th and Pinehurst.

A new arrival in the neighborhood is Cafe Santiago, which provides a relaxing place for residents to sip a juice or coffee. The owners (who also own Bleu on 187th street) hang interesting artists on the interior cafe walls. There is a nice patio in back of the cafe.

Around the corner from China Wok in Pinehurst is Helene & Co, which serves coffee and pastries in the morning. Hovering over the scene is the large brick apartment building. At the other end of 187th street is the animal clinic shown in the righthand photo. The neighborhood is very pet-friendly; many animal lovers live here because several of the co-ops have relaxed pet ownership rules.
