Art Deco buildings in the Fort Tryon area, New York City.

These three buildings are on Fort Washington Ave. The building on the left has a staggered facade which aligns the building's axis at a diagonal to the street's direction, a common Art Deco construction style. Also notice the corner windows, construction which first became technically possible at the same time that Art Deco was popular. The center building -- at the corner of Fort Washington and 190th street -- has three main wings. The entrance is through the middle wing. Notice the decorative medallion near the top corner of each wing. The building on the right is built with more exhuberant brickwork.

A particularly interesting building is 570 Fort Washington Avenue. The building's exterior, shown on the left, is unremarkable. But the lobby, shown in the two righthand photos, is an amazing Deco jewel. Walking into the lobby is like finding oneself back in the 1930s again. Check out the mural in the lefthand photo.

Another building with a cool lobby is 250 Cabrini. Like 570 Fort Washington, the lobby remains decorated in high Deco fashion. A stunning series of black and white photos of the neighborhood is hung in the lobby; the photos accentuate the feeling that one has entered the glamorous past when walking into the building.
